Opinions on a new R2D idea
Hi guys. I've enjoyed GMing my Dungeon Crawlers R2D, and I just came up with another idea.
I figured I'd run it past you guys to see if anyone would be interested in joining / giving criticism.
Here's the game.
So, any thoughts, critiques, etc. would be much appreciated.
Thanks!
I figured I'd run it past you guys to see if anyone would be interested in joining / giving criticism.
Here's the game.
- Rules:
- This is a D20 game, using the usual scale. However, I will bias the rolls based on how intelligent the action was. "Lolz i kil teh d00d" is going to get you injured, while "I aim my energy pistol, and shoot the left shoulder of the man" will get you some extra points.
5 players may be in the game, with no waiting list. Dead players have 2 turns after “dying” to be revived, and after that period, there is no coming back. After fully being removed from the game, the party will be down a member. Tough luck.
Each player gets a major action, and a minor action each turn. Major actions are needed for training skills, while minor actions are things like talking to players, or opening a normal door. As a general rule, any time that you would be attacking someone, that would be a major action.
I will roll as soon as everyone in the game is ready, and I will wait for 24 hours for someone to post, when they are the only person left to post.
If you know that you will be unable to post, I will NPC you for up to 3 rolls or 2 days (whichever is longer), then kill you off.
- Backstory:
- You are 5 of the recruits that have applied for a spot in the prestigious Elite Monstrous Battle Squad . The EMBS is an organization the battles evil rulers and monsters, wherever they come from. As part of your application, you have been issued a basic mission. Simply clear the overgrown planet Xallion of it's inhabitants.
How little the parties involved knew about what was going to occur. The scans of the planet couldn't possibly prepare you for what was actually on it. Someone who can cloak the highest resolution scanners available, for one. Sure, you could deal with rabid animals, but a whole culture that is out to get you? Good luck in that.
You five are in transit via the space ship Gozdron to Xallion, which is about 1 hour from your destination. You have some basic weapons and armor, but you are expected to craft your own tools from materials found on the infested planet. Part of the training, you see.
Scans of the planet returned that there are corrosive acid storms, lava, and other environmental hazards, but no serious atmospheric problems – It has breathable air, and drinkable water.
Once you reach Xallion, you will take a shuttle down with a small amount of supplies, and you will not have any contact with the crew of Gozdron until you put up a distress beacon, which will hopefully show on their scans. Once you beam up, your score will be calculated based on how much of the planet you civilized in the time used.
Each member of the group has the following starting inventory:
Energy pistol (takes stray heat and energy from surrounding heat sources and transforms it into a powerful shock wave)
Quazol drill (battery powered hand-drill with a Quazol bit. Quazol is roughly comparable to emerald in terms of toughness)
20 one-liter bottles of purified water
20 insta-ration packs (each contains enough energy to constitute a typical meal)
Bio-hazard containment suit (worn)
Universal translator (works with any developed language)
- Inventory system:
- Each player may carry (unassisted by bags or the such) 10 types of small items (multiple items of the same type stack) with them. Anything the size of a loaf of bread or smaller is considered a small item. Anything larger than that will be assigned a size ranking, which is equal to the amount of small item spaces it takes up.
There is no typical currency within this game, but if you meet any civilized people, they may be willing to barter for items or goods.
- Skills / abilities:
- Whenever you use a skill in an action, I will give you XP for it. Depending on your level of XP, you will receive certain bonuses to related actions (e.g. 50XP in aiming guns gives you a +1 to all actions aiming a gun). XP is shown in the Abilities area of your profile.
There is no typical “magic” in this game.
- Combat system:
- D10 + bonuses V.S. D10 + bonuses
If the attacker has a higher number, he deals damage.
If the defender has a higher number, the attack is dodged, and the attacker may fumble/take damage.
So, any thoughts, critiques, etc. would be much appreciated.
Thanks!

No. Just no. The plot is just like, you land a planet. Have fun. The rest of the stuff is pretty generic. I don't know, I personally don't see this being much. It just seems like you threw it together in a few minutes.

To be honest, I see where you're coming from. Keep in mind that this is just a shell of the plot, and I do have a bit more planned as to "surprises" on the planet. I'm just looking for first opinions on a game of this type. Look at how the Dungeon Crawlers started. There was no plot, just run free. Then Gozdron and the Bozkaroon happened. If people aren't impressed by the current plot, I'll reveal more, I just don't want to ruin the surprise immediately.

Alright
I'll see if anyone else is interested before I post the game. Glad to hear someone is interested though.

Using d100 for combat will result in a very high luck:skill ratio. Are you sure that's what you want?

I might join something like this. I like how if you lose a member, another player won't be jumping in. Makes you really think about your actions, and how it could affect the rest of the game if you die.

Oh, and you don't need to enclose spoiler titles in quotes.

Clear an entire planet of 70% of its hazardous creatures? Doesn't that seem like a rather extreme job?
I don't know... it all seems highly generic to me TBH...

Re: Opinions on a new R2D idea
Alright. I'll put a little more work into the plot, as I can see how generic it looks at the moment.
About the 70% goal -- Yes, that does seem rather large. Let me take that back, as I wrote this in about an hour at 10PM... Stuff is going to be fixed. That's why I posted it here first.
Edit: Added this to the backstory, along with a mission change: "How little the parties involved knew about what was going to occur. The scans of the planet couldn't possibly prepare you for what was actually on it. Someone who can cloak the highest resolution scanners available, for one. Sure, you could deal with rabid animals, but a whole culture that is out to get you? Good luck in that." I feel like that gives you more of an idea of how the game is going to go, without giving away all of the secrets.

Re: Opinions on a new R2D idea
As others said, it seems like it's a generic shoot this kill that RtD. There's already too many of those on the internet.
And it's also why I'm not making progress with my RtD. The story will not begin to develop if the players decide to just rack up their powers while in deep space and never go back to where there are actually people, and if I will try to "guide" them back they will shoot the guide, quite literally too.

Alright. Thanks for your feedback.
This was just an idea, and it seems like it should stay as such.
As always, thanks for helping me guys
